Story:
Surya (Mahesh Babu) comes to Mumbai with a sole aim to become “Bhai” of the city. Around the same time Police Commissioner Ajay Bharadwaj (Naazar) proudly announces that Mumbai is free of ‘Bhai’ and their Mafia. Instantly Surya, along with friend (Brahmaji) as assistant to his proposed crimes starts recruiting jobless rowdies for monthly salaries.  In order to curb the police menace, he eyes the Mumbai Police Commissioner’s daughter Chitra (Kajal) and also loves her.
What is the motive of Surya to become a Bhai and run Mafia like a Business by establishing centers in the name of Surya Exports & Imports in each and every major city? Who is Surya and what is his connection with aspiring Prime Minister politician Ghanapuleti Jayadev (Prakashraj)? These questions form the rest of the story.
Analysis:
The entire story of the film can be easily summed up in a line or two. Mumbai is the set-up for the mafia theme. A don enters it and slowly grows in power and stature. There is a little flashback of the hero’s childhood, which has nothing to do with his goal though. There is a love interest to add spice to the typical conventional story. Films like ‘Nayakudu’ ‘Dhalapathi’ ‘Saamrajyam’ were classier at portraying such stories.
Though the audience might like the bitter truth dialogs been spoken by Mahesh, the acceptance level is likely to be low. The main reason been that charismatic Mahesh is stereotyped in soft lover boy image.
In short, Businessman is typical Puri film with loads of rowdies and cops scattered all over the screen.
Performances:
It is Mahesh Babu’s show all the way. His intense performance, dialog delivery, charming style, striking looks and powerful dialogues keeps the film alive. His characterization is infused with humor especially the naughty one-liners he exchanges with Kajal, making it more appealing.
Kajal Agarwal is average. Despite having many scenes in the film, her character though glamorous, fails to make an impression. Nazaar is neat and looks well-maintained at his age. Sayaji Shinde does his usual stuff. Brahmaji is fine. Prakash Raj is routine.  Dharmavarapu is contained. Shweta Bharadwaj sizzles in her item song while the girl doing the role of Kajal’s friend is funny.
Finally Subba Raju makes his presence but the scope and span of his character is limited.
Technicalities:
The best part of the movie is its dialogues written by Puri Jagannadh. Music composed by Thaman is good. He did a good job with the background score and scored a couple of chartbusters. Choreography
is not innovative at all. Cinematography is neat and so is the editing.  Screenplay is racy but there is nothing to talk about.
On the technical front, it is like every Puri Jagannadh’s film. Production values are excellent. However, the direction by Puri Jagannadh is poor as many of the scenes are purposeless while most of the movie is away from reality and logic.
Final Word:
Businessman will be liked by Mahesh fans especially his female fans. It is unlikely to appeal to people looking for some wholesome entertainment and a well-written script with well-crafted scenes.
RATING:  3.25/5
